The Netherlands are still trailing Iceland and the Czech Republic in Group A after six games and time is running out for them. The prospect of missing Euro 2016 is shocking and should motivate the Dutch to play their best game, because there are only four matches left. They play against the leading Iceland and will have home pitch advantage, so they are expected to throw everything they’ve got at the Northerners.

The Czech Republic has an easy match at home against Kazakhstan, so even if the Netherlands win today, it is unlikely for them to climb on the second place. Nobody expected competition to be this intense in a group with a clear favorite, but this is not the only example worth contemplating. In Group C Spain is still trailing leaders Slovakia, the only team undefeated so far. Their chances to qualify are much better but it would be humiliating for the world and European champions to finish from the second place.

Germany is in a very similar position, as it sits in the second place behind Poland and with a minimum advantage over Scotland. In the long run, they are still expected to win the group and they don’t have that many points to recuperate, but the leaders are not to be trifled with. Poland won at home and managed to keep a clean sheet against Germany, yet they will have a much difficult job when they travel to Berlin for the second leg.

England is cruising with six consecutive games and Portugal has returned to the top of its group, despite losing one game. Both of them are expected to advance to the Euro 2016 as group winners, but the same can’t be said about it earlier. They have a hard time overtaking Croatia and didn’t managed to close the gap in the head to head match, so it is likely for them to settle for the second-place ahead of Norway.
